PadmaShri. MohanMULL Chordia

Born on 26th August 1902 in a village in Noida Jodhpur District, Rajasthan Padma Shri. Mohanmull Chordia was the son of late Shri Siremull Chordia. He had a humble beginning and did not have any formal education

In the year 1917, he was married to Smt. NENI KAVUR BAI and they decided that very same year to come to Chennai .SHRI. SOHANMULLJI CHORDIA of M/S. SAH AGURCHAND MANMULL adopted him and took him under his wing. The firm Sah Agurchand Manmull was established in the year 1847 with a vision to provide good education to all. Along with few friends,he decided and founded SHRI SWETHAMBER STHANAKWASI JAIN EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY in the year 1926 and was instrumental in starting a school named SHRI STHANAKWASI JAIN PATHSALA in Rajasthan.

In the year 1927, he started free Ayurvedic Aushadhalaya at kuchera in Rajasthan and in 1940, another free Ayurvedic Auaushadhalaya at NOKHA, Rajasthan. He handed over the Ayurvedic Aushadhalaya which was started at kuchera to government of Jodhpur and also gave donation to run the Aushadhalaya. Later the Aushadhalaya was converted to an allopathic dispensary and was renamed after his adopted father as SHRI SOHANMULLJI CHORDIA CHARITABLE - GOVERNMENT DISPENSARY.

On the completion of 100 years of his Firm SAH AGURCHAND MANMULL in the year 1947, he founded “ SHRI MOHANMULL CHORDIA CHARITABLE TRUST” by donating huge sum to the trust.Subsequently he founded the “ AGURCHAND MOHANMULL CHORDIA CHARITABLE TRUST”.

Being the president of SHRI S. S. JAIN EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY for many years, he had served in various capacities. He was also responsible for starting S.S.JAIN BORDING HOME and establishing SHRI A.G.JAIN HIGH SCHOOL in Chennai. His generosity was limitless and his act often dazzled with handsome donation

In the year 1952 he expressed his desire to establish a college in the city of Chennai and offered a donation to SHRI S.S. JAIN EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY.In the same year SHRI AGURCHAND MANMULL JAIN COLLEGE was founded. He was  monumental  behind starting the college and making it into an avid educational platform to premier educational institution in the city.

His total contribution to start the college had made him a chief donor to the college. He was the Life President of the Management Committee to the College. He was the President of the Reception Committee when the “ADHIVESAN OF ALL INDIA SWETHAMBER STHANAKWASI JAIN CONFERENCE “ was held in 1950 in Chennai.

In the year 1950, he was actively involved in formation of SHRI JAIN MEDICAL RELIEF SOCIETY, Chennai that was running 13 Dispensaries and Maternity Hospitals in Chennai. He also donated to the society to start a Dispensary in the year 1953 named “SOHANMULL CHORDIA DISPENSARY” Chennai.

With vision that had no boundary, he donated for the construction of New Block of JAIN BHAVAN at NEW DELHI

He also donated generously to Rajasthan Government for famine relief  and water supply scheme in his native place at Kuchera.

He organized BOOK BANK PROJECT at BANGALORE. Within 2 years ,more than 500 students were benefited with free books. Subsequently he handled over this project to RAJASTHAN- YOUTH ASSOCIATION, BANGALORE and until now thousands of students are still benefiting.

He organized Eye Camps in Kuchera, his native place where 100 Eye operations were performed.He was the founder president of “BHAGWAN MAHAVEER AHIMSA PRACHAR SANG” which had done exemplary services in the field.

He was the president for the RESEARCH FOUNDATION under “JAINOLOGY”, and was instrumental  in establishing department of Jainology in the UNIVERSITY at CHENNAI.

In the year 1972 he was awarded PADMASHRI by the government of India for his yeoman services rendered to the cause of humanity ,education and medical services which he renderedHe had constructed a Hospital in memory of his wife “NENI KAVUR BAI MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE HOSPITAL” at KUCHERA, with all modern Amenities.

He was running many Financial Institutions through which various Bus & Lorry Operators of Southern India were benefitted to expand their Transport Business. Apart from the said finance companies, he has also started M/S. MEDOPHARM in the year of 1967, a leading Pharmaceutical Manufactures and Export business .He was conferred FOR THE SAKE OF HONOUR award by the rotary club in the year 1982.He was associated in various capacities in the innumerable Religious, Educational, Medical, Social and Animal welfare societies such as:

  • PRESIDENT of “SANATHANA DHARMA VIDYALAYA” CHENNAI, for more than 15 years.

  • PRESIDENT for more than 15 years of “SUGUNI BAI GIRLS SCHOOL” in CHENNAI.

  • PRESIDENT for more than 15 years of “VENKATESWARA AUSHADALAYA”

  • PRESIDENT for more than 20 years of “MAHAJAN COMMITTEE”, in CHENNAI.

  • PRESIDENT for more than 20 years of “HUMANITY LEAGUE” CHENNAI.

  • PRESIDENT of SHRI. S.S.JAIN EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY, CHENNAI.

  • LIFE PRESIDENT of A.M.JAIN COLLEGE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE.

  • PRESIDENT of JAIN MEDICAL RELIEF SOCIETY, CHENNAI.

  • PRESIDENT OF MADRAS PINJRAPOLE

  • VICE PRESIDENT of INDIAN VEGETARIAN CONGRESS, CHENNAI.

  • PRESIDENT OF ALL INDIA SWETHAMBAR STHANKAWASI JAIN CONFERENCE, NEW DELHI.

He breathed his last in the year 1983; he is survived by 5 sons and 2 daughters.

 

He had donated his eyes. A list of his various high positions he has occupied may be tiringly long, but yet necessary to get an insight into his charitable personality.

 

To Honour him, the southern part of mint st., starting from Southern railway G.M’s office to Authiappa Naicken st., cutting, was named after him by the then late chief minister of Tamilnadu 

SHRI M.G.RAMACHANDRAN, for the meritorious services of late Padma Shri. MOHANMULLJI CHORDIA and the same was published in Tamilnadu Gazette.
